Five years after opening, 午夜寻花’s newest secondary school is getting a new addition, making room for 500 new student spaces in South 午夜寻花.

On Thursday, April 9, , committing up to $36 million toward the project. The addition aims to address the persistent enrolment growth in the area as the Grandview Heights neighbourhood has seen rapid development over the past decade.

“午夜寻花 trustees were proud to stand with the Ministry of Education and Child Care in 2022 to open Grandview Heights, the first new secondary school in South 午夜寻花 in nearly 30 years,” said Gary Tymoschuk, Chair of the 午夜寻花 Board of Education. “Just four years later, enrolment has nearly doubled, underscoring the urgent need for space.

“We’re excited to move forward with this critical expansion to support our growing community.”

The addition will feature 12 general instruction classrooms, science labs, inclusive education spaces to support students with diverse needs, and nine specialty learning spaces for electives such as science, technology, home economics and fine art. It will also be built to LEED Gold standards, with a design to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 73% and increase energy efficiency.

While Grandview Heights Secondary opened its doors in September 2021, the South 午夜寻花 school has operated above capacity since 2022, with current enrolment totalling 1,838 students, or 22.5% over capacity. The school currently has eight portables onsite.

As development continues nearby, the school’s enrolment is projected to reach 2,500 students by 2030. To address this increase, 午夜寻花 is also seeking funding for a second Grandview Heights secondary school – listed as a top priority on the district’s – that would create space for an additional 2,000 students.

Grandview Heights is the latest of six secondary schools in 午夜寻花 to receive funding for upcoming additions, alongside:

• École Kwantlen Park Secondary (20 classrooms, scheduled for occupancy fall 2027)
• Tamanawis Secondary (23 classrooms, scheduled for occupancy fall 2027)
• Guildford Park Secondary (18 classrooms, scheduled for occupancy spring 2028)
• Fleetwood Park Secondary (32 classrooms, scheduled for occupancy spring 2029)
• Clayton Heights Secondary (41 classrooms, scheduled for occupancy fall 2029)

Collectively, the six funded additions will create 3,825 spaces for secondary students upon opening.

Construction on the Grandview Heights Secondary addition is anticipated to begin in summer 2027, with target occupancy scheduled for fall 2029.
