STEAM K-7 at Brookside Elementary
Our STEAM K-7 program offers students opportunities to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) through cross-curricular inquiry and project-based learning. Students are immersed in an enriched and fast-paced learning environment, where the ability to learn independently, think critically, collaborate with peers, innovate, and contribute thoughtfully is supported and fostered. Students will be encouraged to create, invent and tinker with novel concepts or ideas using a variety of tools within a Makerspace, which is their classroom. Opportunities such as Genius Hour, allow students the time and space to explore individual interests and passions in depth. Cross-curricular STEM challenges encourage innovation and creative problem solving within specific parameters. STEAM students are encouraged to take positive risks in their learning and are given many opportunities to nurture their leadership abilities.
High Parental Involvement
If your child is enrolled in the STEAM K-7 program, please note that there is a very high level of parental involvement. As students are only in school four days a week, parents are responsible for their child’s understanding of 20% of the curriculum when learning at home on Fridays. To ensure their child’s success in school, especially at the Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 levels, parents are highly encouraged to spend additional time throughout the week building on their child’s reading, writing, and basic computational numeracy skills at home.
Students who will SUCCEED in the STEAM program:
- Take the initiative and demonstrate leadership skills
- Can work independently and in groups
- Can work effectively with students of multiple ages and abilities
- Can contribute and share their ideas with others
- Are organized
- Are always eager to do their personal best
- Are intrinsically motivated
- Are willing to take positive risks
Students who will STRUGGLE in the STEAM program:
- Need a lot of teacher direction, support, or supervision

- Need support/reminders for classroom routines
- Need or prefer a highly structured learning environment

- Are uncomfortable contributing or sharing their ideas with others
